Aman father to man anti-ragging helpline

Three years later, ragging is yet to be eradicated from higher education institutes.

It took the death of a student,Aman Kachroo,at a Himachal Pradesh medical college for the Centre to wake up to the menace of ragging. Three years later, ragging is yet to be eradicated from higher education institutes. Now,Amans father,Rajendra Kachroo, has joined hands with the government to run its 24×7 anti-ragging helpline.

His trust Aman Satya Kachroo Trust will on July 26 take over the 24-hour toll-free anti-ragging helpline number,18001805522.

The Trust has set up a system wherein a student will be able to track the status of his complaint on the Internet. Kachroo says the Trust has developed a customised call centre management software where procedures are imbedded in the software.

A complaint will not get closed until we have a recorded consent of the complainant to close the case. All communications with college authorities/ police/ students will be logged. College authorities will be informed within minutes of recording a complaint. For serious complaints the local police will be informed. No complaint will remain unattended. That is our promise, Kachroo said.

While in 2009 the Centre set up an anti-ragging helpline under Edcil,a public sector enterprise,on recommendations made by Kachroo and others, there were complaints that it was not being operated efficiently. This prompted the HRD Ministry to hand it over to Kachroos Trust.

As many as 1,439 complaints were made on this helpline until May 2012. The maximum number of cases reported were from Uttar Pradesh.
