6 injured in fresh violence in Assam

At least six people were injured three of them seriously in fresh violence in Kokrajhar Thursday. Curfew was imposed on Rangiya in Kamrup district after a related incident.

Nine columns of the Army were deployed in Rangiya and adjoining areas. The 21 Mountain Division is headquartered in Rangiya.

Sources in Kokrajhar said occupants of an autorickshaw on NH 31C were attacked with acid Thursday morning. Six people sustained burn injuries. The attackers fled on two motorbikes.

In Rangiya,a subdivisional town in Kamrup district some 60 km from Guwahati,a mob blocked NH 31,set a bus on fire and stoned vehicles. Police opened fire,and later clamped a curfew.

Kamrup SP Parthasarathi Mahanta said the mob was protesting the killing of one Sahidul Islam,a driver from Udiyana locality who was allegedly murdered in adjoining Baksa district on Wednesday night.

Baksa is a Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District. The car Islam was travelling in was found burnt in Kaurbaha village in Baksa.

In the evening,police fired rubber bullets to disperse a mob that gheraoed Tamulpur police station in Baksa district. The mob tried to barge into the police station after 65 people arrested for the Kaurbaha arson were brought there,Home Secretary G D Tripathi said.

Meanwhile,the government said over 5,000 people lodged in relief camps in Kokrajhar,Dhubri,Chirang and Bongaigaon had returned to their homes over the past 24 hours.
