Sri Lanka on Sunday deported three journalists with UK-based Channel 4 television allegedly for false reporting on the ongoing war against LTTE and damaging the countrys reputation.
Channel 4 News Asia correspondent Nick Paton Walsh, his cameraman Matt Jasper and producer Bessie Du left for Britain on Sunday morning.
There was an inquiry by the CID,which found that what they had telecast was not authentic and was damaging to Sri Lanka, said the governments Media Centre for National Security chief Lakshman Hulugalle.
In London,ITN,which produces Channel 4 News, said the reporting team has been told to leave Sri Lanka after reporting allegations of abuse and ill-treatment of Tamils held in internment camps.
We will be seeking an explanation from the Sri Lankan government for this decision, an ITN spokesperson said. The ITN statement said the report, broadcast on May 5,contained the first independently filmed video from one of the internment camps in the city of Vavuniya.
Britains Foreign Office described the deportation as deeply disappointing.
