In the entire episode regarding the withdrawal of deemed university status to some institutions, the Culture Ministry has been one of the biggest, albeit unintended, victims. Two of the universities funded by the ministry have figured in the list of 44 institutions which have been deprived of their deemed university status.
The Nava Nalanda Mahavira in Nalanda,Bihar, and the National Museum Institute of History of Art,Conservation and Museology have both been stripped of their deemed university status. The latter is,in fact, currently headed by a joint secretary in the ministry.
Taken aback by the development, the Culture Ministry has now decided to investigate what had been going wrong with these two institutions.
These two institutions never informed us that such a thing was likely to happen. We have now written to both of them asking for the facts, Culture Secretary Jawhar Sircar told The Indian Express.
Sircar said he had also written to the Human Resource Development Ministry requesting the criteria on which the disqualifications have happened. Unfortunately,we were not in the loop in this entire episode. We are now trying to see what can be done so that the prestige of these two particular institutions in particular is not hurt, he said. He said at this position he was not aware whether the deemed university status could be restored to these two institutions.
