• Anil Kumble has now become the 10th-highest Test wicket-taker after claiming 8-141 on Monday. He is now on 378 from 81 Tests. Among current players, only Shane Warne (491), Muttiah Muralitharan (485) and Glenn McGrath (430) are ahead of him.

• Kumble also became the third Indian bowler to take eight wickets in an innings in an away Test. Erapalli Prasanna (8-76 v New Zealand, Auckland, 1975-76) and Kapil Dev (8-85 v Pakistan, Lahore, 1982-83 and 8-106 v Australia, Adelaide, 1985-86) have done it before.

• Simon Katich and Jason Gillespie set a new record for the eighth wicket for Australia against India by putting on 117. They beat Thomas Veivers and Graham McKenzie’s 73 at Madras in 1964-65.

Sachin Tendulkar became the fourth Indian batsman to score more than 300 runs in a Test match.

• This was the first time India didn’t enforce the follow-on against Australia. The last time India did not enforce the follow-on was against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 1999-2000. New Zealand were all out for 308 runs in reply to India’s 583 for seven declared.
