Soccer fans set up road blocks and attacked cable operators’ offices across West Bengal protesting against RPG Netcom’s failure to beam the Brazil-England World Cup quarter final match today.
Baton-wielding policemen chased away fans who ransacked a cable operator’s office in Kasba, police said. In Howrah town, people obstructed roads around Howrah maidan, Kadamtala and Panchanantala, Howrah DSP Rajiv Mishra said. There were also reports of mob violence in RPG Netcom’s Howrah office.
Among the worst affected areas in south Kolkata were Kasba, Park Lane, Park Circus, Bhowanipore, Ritchie Road and Topsia. While Latin Americans sailed past the English to move up to the semis, frantic supporters, unable to watch the match live on their television sets, rang up newspaper offices to ascertain the result.
Cable services were restored on the west bank at 1.45 pm and in south Kolkata after 3 pm. An RPG Netcom spo-kesman regretted inconvenience caused to consumers and said an inquiry was on. The company and RPG group flagship CESC Ltd, a private power utility, had earlier assured uninterrupted telecast.
