KOLHAPUR, Jan 11: Vijaya Mali, grandmother of Bhagyashree, one of the ten children allegedly kidnapped and murdered by Anjanabai Gavit in connivance with her two daughters Renuka and Seema, today narrated before the court the events surrounding the abduction.

Deposing before the additional sessions court judge G L Yedke, Vijaya recalled Bhagyashree alias Ranee Anjangonda Patil had worn a yellow frock, had gold ear rings and an ornament on her legs. However, replying to the cross examination conducted by defence advocate Manik Mulik, she was not able to identify the ear rings and the leg ornament. Vijaya reasoned that she could not recollect how it exactly looked as she had seen it long back.

Najeen Nijam Makandar, then police constable of Juna Rajwada police station, stated before the court that he recorded the child’s missing complaint, when Vijaya had approached the police on April 22, 1995. Makandar, however, waved aside allegations of inefficiency of his force for not being able to trace the child atvarious points during the probe.
