PUNE, April 23: The University of Pune today gave the go-ahead to Symbiosis Society for seeking the deemed university status in the disciplines of computer, management and law, registrar and the varsity’s official spokesman Dr Arun Adsool said.
Speaking to mediapersons on the concluding day of the meeting of the Academic Council (AC), Adsool said that Symbiosis had forwarded an application for seeking the varsity’s no-objection to its plans for acquiring a deemed varsity status.
When contacted Dr S B Mujumdar, founder director, Symbiosis said that the approval from the university is only the first step and now the State government would have to recommend it to the Ministry of HRD, All India Council of Technical Education and the University Grants Commission which will later appoint committees to review the functioning of the centres.
While the AC continued the affiliation of 52 colleges, the body however turned down the proposal of the Abeda Inamdar Senior College for Girls seeking permanent affiliation as the college did not match up to the varsity’s requirements.
Even as the house unanimously agreed to confer the status of professor emeritus on former vice-chancellors of the University of Pune Prof. S C Gupte and Prof. Ram Takwale, a statement was issued today by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad opposing the move. The registrar said that Gupte – referring to newspaper reports regarding the alleged opposition to the move – had in a letter called upon Vice-Chancellor Dr Arun Nigavekar only to confer the status if it was unanimously approved by the Council.
It was decided to appoint an independent scrutiny committee to bridge the gap between local inquiry committees (LICs) and the Academic Council. To ensure further efficiency of the LICs, the independent committee will be empowered to regulate its functioning, scrutinise the reports and make appointments.
