Cheque handed over to CM’s relief fund
Employees of the m/s Narmada Chematur Petrochemicals Limited have donated Rs 41,047 to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the cyclone-affected areas of Kutch and Saurashtra by contributing a day’s salary each. A cheque of the amount was recently presented to Bharuch District Collector S Aparna by NCPL director in-charge C Raghava Rao.

Granthgoshthi seeks youth profiles
Granthgoshthi, a city based literary group, has invited youths in the 15-25 age group and with excellent records in literary, cultural and social activities to send in their profiles for a Sanskar Parivar project to promote talent. Cancer detection camp in August
A free cancer detection camp for women will be organised by the Shri Saikrupa Vadhu-Var Mahiti Kendra on August 9 at the Shri Satyabhambai Ambegaonkar C K P Hall, Dandia Bazar. Ahmedabad-based cancer specialist and gynaecologist Dr Kalpana Kothari will deliver a lecture on cancer at 9 am, followed by a free-of-charge medical examination of women over 35 years of age. City-based pathologist Dr Uday Purandare will conduct pap-smear tests at nominal rates. For registration call Sudha Khale on 425204 before July 25.

Inter-school song contest
The Bharat Vikas Parishad will organise an inter-school national group song contest at Gandhi Nagar Gruh on August 20. Yoga course from August 1
The Haribhakti Rameshwar Trust’s Arogya Mandir, Ellora Park, will commence its next two-month yoga course from August 1. Cataract operations will be performed upto October 15 at concessional rates. The interested should contact their office or telephone 340342 between 7 and 10 a.m.

Junior Jaycees elect chairperson
Jharna Trivedi was elected chairperson of the Junior Jaycees wing of Alkapuri Junior Chambers for 1997-98 at an installation meeting held here on Saturday. Parag Shah was elected vice-chairman, Sajita Jalil general secretary, Shital Shah treasurer and Vishal Chauhan and Pratik Dhulabhai directors.

PUCL office-bearers elected
D N Pathak was unanimously elected president of the People’s Union of Civil Liberties, Gujarat wing, at their annual general body meeting here on Sunday. Tulsi Boda was elected working president. The five vice-presidents are Kirit Bhatt, H C Dholakia, J S Bandukwala (all from Vadodara) and Dinesh Shukla and Prakash Shah from Ahmedabad. Gautam Thacker was elected general secretary, while Martin Macwan, Damini Shah, Trupti Shah and Bhogilal Makwana were elected organising secretaries. Among the regional secretaries were Yasin Dalal (Rajkot), Dhirubhai Dhandhudkia (Bhavnagar), Zia Pathan (Ankleshwar) and J Staney (Surat).

Satsangh conducts examinations
More than 1300 people — 286 children, 488 men and 565 women — appeared for the Satsangh education examination conducted by the Bochasanvasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha of the Swaminaryan sect on Sunday. A total of 3125 people appeared for the examination in 47 centres in the district.

District police seizes rum
The Vadodara district police on Thursday night seized 470 quarter-bottles of rum being smuggled into the district from Madhya Pradesh. District Superintendent of Police Shamsher Singh said the liquor and a jeep had been seized and two persons arrested under the Prohibition Act.
