
UT Engineering dept urged to expedite road, streetlight repairs in Sector 43
With the number of accidents in the city witnessing a steep rise over the last one year, the traffic police department has asked the UT Engineering department to recarpet the potholed roads and repair the defunct streetlights immediately.
Officials said there have been over 1000 accidents, both minor and major, reported in the city due to the poor condition of roads and streetlights. Speaking to Newsline, Superintendent of Police Traffic H S Doon said they had taken up the matter with the Engineering department in the presence of the Home Secretary in a meeting held last week.
8220;The condition of roads is getting from bad to worse and there are several roads without streetlights. It leads to accidents more often,8221; added Doon. Sources said the Home Secretary has also instructed the Engineering department to expedite the work.
Officials with the Engineering department, meanwhile, assured that work would start soon. 8220;There are many roads where the recarpetting work is on. Other damaged roads will be recarpetted soon. Also, we have initiated work of repairing the defunct streetlights,8221; added an official.
Sector 43 residents, meanwhile, have lodged several complaints with the Engineering department regarding the issue. 8220;We met several officers but they gave mere assurances. There have been several accidents reported during night, courtesy the poor condition of roads and defunct streetlights,8221; said Daleep Sahai, a resident of Sector 43.
