The day Prakash Karat handed over the CPIM Politburo resolution to PM Manmohan Singh, it became the case of either the Government stays or the deal with the US. But looking at subsequent developments, even if the PM sticks to the 8220;best deal8221;, there is no imminent danger to the Government. The question is, what is the logic behind the Left insistence, to the extent of causing danger to the Government? They are not going to get a majority in the next election on their own. Even if the Left parted ways with UPA, the scenario won8217;t change much. The focus is shifting from the nuclear deal to the very survival of the Government. The Left is confused, because it has no objection to the collapse of the Government but at the same time it is not ready to face the consequent mid-term election. It is immaterial whether the Manmohan Singh Government falls or stays but what is more painful and distressing is the prospect of our national leaders becoming objects of ridicule at the international level because of their conflict.
