UNPA stands divided

Cracks in the UNPA became visible: Om Prakash Chautala of the INLD said he was saddened by Mulayam’s turnaround and AGP’s Brindaban Goswami said his party would vote against the UPA government. “Now for the third consecutive time, they (SP) want to be insulted,” said Chautala. But the TDP preferred to wait and watch. “SP hasn’t announced support to Congress yet,” said its leader K Yerran Naidu.

‘VOTE FOR SECULAR FORCES’

The SP has called a meeting of its MPs on July 8 to tell them to vote for “secular forces” in the event of a trial of strength. Stating that the SP was “committed” to secularism, Amar Singh said L K Advani and communal politics were “more dangerous” than US President George W Bush.

‘SEEK TRUST VOTE’

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani demanded that the Govt seek an immediate trust vote before committing itself to any international deal.

‘TRIED TO TOPPLE’

Jaswant Singh admitted that the BJP had plans to topple the UPA Government with the help of UNPA leaders during the presidential elections. Singh said the NDA was ready to extend outside support to any UNPA candidate for prime ministership, in lieu of support to Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

THREAT, ONCE MORE

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan warned: “If somebody wants to precipitate a crisis, we might have to withdraw support for the government even before the PM returns from Japan.”
