CHANDIGARH, JUNE 11: The University Grants Commission UGC, New Delhi, has asked the Panjab University authorities to supply a list of quot;sensitive and strategicquot; institutions, organisations and courses for regulating the participation of foreign nationals.

The UGC is learnt to have written to the PU authorities last month following a nation-wide move initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development HRD in the last week of December 1998. The ministry sought to identify such courses or institutions in the country where foreign nationals should be disallowed enrolment or their participation limited quot;due to security reasonsquot;, sources said.

It was added that the drive has been moving at an exceptionally slow pace with the HRD ministry writing to the UGC as early as December 24, 1998 and the commission, in turn, sounding the Panjab University about the move in the third week of May.

However, sources point out that the drive has now been expedited due to the international situation prevailing currently and the increase in security threat from persons of foreign origin. Secondly, the dates for admission to the new sessions of various courses are fast approaching, sources add.

The university authorities are learnt to have written to the deans of various faculties on Friday listing out the courses imparted at the Panjab University , asking the deans to quot;pinpoint the sensitive and strategic courses to enable us to proceed furtherquot;.
