Noted scientist U R Rao has resigned from the chairmanship of the Prasar Bharati Corporation apparently to avoid any controversy over a possible ‘‘conflict of interest.’’
Rao was appointed chairman in October last year when he was a part-time member—his term was due to expire in November next year.
Speaking to The Indian Express from Bangalore, Rao confirmed that he had sent in his resignation to the government and said that he had asked it to be accepted with effect from September 15.
‘‘I am a consultant to many companies on technical aspects. I have decided to quit to avoid any controversy,’’ said Rao. Sources said reservations were raised over his consultancy to a broadcast company that was seen as a rival of Prasar Bharati.
Rao declined to give details but said he drew no salary from the Government or from any of the government institutions he advised. These include the Department of Space and the National Physical Laboratory. He will continue in these roles.
B G Verghese, a veteran journalist and seniormost member of the board, may be made acting chairman once Rao’s resignation is accepted by the government.
