The online admission system that was supposed to be implemented in 2006, is still not in place even after two years. The system will allow engineering students staying in rural areas of the state to pay their fees online and complete other admission-related formalities from their village itself.

To start this system in Gujarat colleges, two years ago, the Gujarat Education Department had carried out surveys in various colleges of other states, where this system was in effect.

M N Patel, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Gujarat University, said, 8220;This system will help rural students and allow them to pay fees online without wasting time. Two years have passed but the wait is still not over and nothing has been done so far.8221;

Patel, who is also the principal of L D College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, added: 8220;Once the system is in place, it will stop the students from commuting from one place to another to complete their admission-related formalities. I have no idea why the education department is delaying the implementation process.8221;nbsp;

On condition of anonymity, a state Education department official told Newsline, 8220;Now, all engineering colleges, which were earlier under other state universities, have come under Gujarat Technological University GTU, Ahmedabad. GTU had also announced a similar online admission system but no work has been carried out so far.8221;

A senior GTU official, added: 8220;We are facing some technical difficulties in the web portal because of which the online admission and fees submission system have not been started yet. We are hopeful to start the system from the next academic year.8221;
