MUMBAI, April 1: The state government has suspended the District Marketing Officer and the District Supply Officer for dereliction of duty8217; in the purchase of foodgrains that had turned black due to untimely rains in Bhandara district.

This was conveyed by Chief Minister Manohar Joshi to the Assembly during question hour today. He was replying to a related question reserved by the Speaker on March 27, 1998 after Food and Civil Supplies Minister Haribhau Bagade failed to give a satisfactory reply about the amount to be paid to farmers by the government.

Untimely and heavy showers all over the state last year caused great damage to crops, especially rice and jowar which turned black rendering them unfit for sale in the open market. The state government had announced that the blackened rice would be bought at the rate of Rs 320 per quintal and the jowar at Rs 280 per quintal. The purchase of the foodgrains was to be made through special centres set up by the local Agriculture Produce Market Committee.

Butno such centre was opened in Bhandara even as the officers informed the government that purchase of foodgrains was on.
