The 18-hour long siege of the Doda police lines ended today with the killing of two fidayeen of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) who had stormed the three-storey building last night.

Three policemen were killed in the shootout while five suffered serious splinter injuries caused by the hurling of grenades by the militants. The injured policemen have been hospitalised. Two policemen had died last night when the militants barged into the police lines.

This is for the first time in the history of Kashmir insurgency that militants have managed to stay inside a security installation for so long. According to police sources, at 9.30 pm last night, the militants — suspected to be Pakistani mercenaries — wearing police uniforms stormed the police lines. ‘‘They came from a nearby hillock and entered after killing Constable Kuldeep Singh and SPO Uttam Singh at the main gate,’’ said Vijay Sambhyal, Superintendent of Police, Doda. They were exploding grenades and firing.

The two militants then entrenched themselves on one of the floors and started exchanging fire with the police personnel inside. A policeman was killed in the shootout, said an officer.
