ROOPNAGAR, Nov 25: The Chamkaur Sahib police has arrested two persons, including an ex-serviceman, for killing a sambar, which is a scheduled animal in Mand area near Sulatanpur village yesterday.

Disclosing this here today, district police chief Ranbir Singh Khatra said that the accused Gurdip Singh, an ex-serviceman, and Prem Singh of Behrampur village were booked under the Wild Life Protection Act. The hide and head of the animal were also recovered from them, he added.

The animal, which had apparently lost its way into the fields of Sultanpur village, was axed to death by the two, who had later distributed its flesh. The police, however, said that the accused were not professional poachers and their arrest followed a tip off.
