
PUNE, Feb 5: A transporter from Talegaon Dabhade and a truck driver from Bhose village in Chakan taluka have been arrested by Shikrapur police on charges of hijacking a truck carrying leather upholstery worth over Rs 8.15 lakh from Shikrapur to TELCO in Pune, recently.
The accused, Babaji Dnyanoba Kute 30 and Shivaji D Chavan 32, had hidden the truck loaded with the upholstery near the vegetable market adjoining to the Talegaon Dhamdhere police station, police said. The truck has already been recovered along with the stolen upholstery. Both the accused have been remanded to seven day long police custody, they added.
The truck belonging to Bhosari-based Goodwill company was bringing the upholstery from the Harita Grammer company in Shikrapur when it was hijacked on January 31 night.
Kute and Chavan boarded the truck at Shikrapur while posing themselves as passengers. They drove away the truck when its driver Raosaheb Lahu Bhosale alighted to breath fresh air after driving some distance.
Raosaheb later hitched lift in a vehicle and went to the Shikrapur police station to lodge a First Information Report FIR. He also provided the detailed description of the hijackers in his FIR.
A police team comprising of Sub Inspector Ashok Gaud, Head Constable R S Mane and constables D H Giramkar and R B Khatal launched a massive hunt in all the villages along the Pune Nashik road to to track down the hijackers.
The police spotted Kute and Chavan sitting along the road at their Bhose village. They detained the duo for interrogations as their appearance matched with the description of hijackers provided by Bhosale. During the course of interrogations, the duo admitted to the crime,the police said.
The preliminary investigations have revealed that Kute owns a truck and works as a transporter at Talegaon Dabhade. Chavan works as a truck driver on contract basis.
