BALASORE, SEPT 26: India8217;s most sophisticated short-range surface-to-air missile, Trishul, was successfully test-fired from the interim test range at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from here, today.
Defence sources said the missile with a range of 50 km was test-fired at 1120 hours.
A deadly weapon against aircraft and ship, Trishul was specifically designed for sea skimming exercise for the navy. The missile uses radar line of sight guidance and is empowered by two stage solid propellant system.
Quick reaction and delivery, difficult to jam microwave frequencies and high manoeuvering capability, make Trishul a versatile and a state-of-the art missile system in this class.
Trishul was one of the five missiles under various stages of development by the Defence Research Development Organisation. It was part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme that began in 1983. Trishul, as the name suggests, has a triple role for three wings of the Indian Defence 8211; Army, Navy and Air Force.
