8226; I completely agree with Divyesh Raythatha8217;s letter, 8216;Atal on headlines8217; IE, June 23. The press should forget about the old regime and focus on the new administration. Manmohan Singh is the right man for the job, at the right time too. When India needed a honest and trustworthy prime minister, we got one. Manmohan Singh will keep India on track, and not bother about some pseudo-Hindutva issue or other 8212; which is simply a waste of time. This is India, not Pakistan.

Wrong on Modi
8226; I do not agree with your assessment on Narendra Modi 8216;BJP fails the test8217;, IE, June 22. Remember that he is the chief minister of a state and the mandate of that state is the only thing that matters. The people have vindicated him, and you should rest your case. Or could it be that you do not have faith in the collective intelligence of a state8217;s citizens? And why only Modi? What happened when the Sikh riots took place? What about the despicable comment from the then prime minister about those riots? And what about the ghastly murders of Pandits in Kashmir? These are not rhetorical questions, but ones that need answers.

BJP8217;s enemies
8226; BJP8217;s loss in these elections has been caused by persons like Sushma Swaraj, Vinay Katiyar, Narendra Modi, Uma Bharati and Pramod Mahajan 8216;Past tense, BJP looks forward to future perfect8217;, IE, June 22. They are so foul-mouthed that their presence in the midst of civilised, decent people, is not acceptable to the Indian public. They are a shame on Indian civilisation.

Pushing BJP around
8226; Being Hindu itself is proof enough of being secular to the core. However, these days anti-Hinduism stance has become pre-requisite for political certification about secular credentials! Even being in league with religious formations is considered politically secular by the same token. The present secular grouping practises perhaps the worst form of divisive polarisation. In UP and Bihar, political formations based on caste and religion have marginalised even the major national parties. It is quite disturbing to see political manoeuvres to push a mellowed BJP back on to the hardline-track only to garner minority votes. For our traditional secularism to survive, vote bank secularism must end.

School meals
8226; School education has a mammoth role in raising the literacy levels of the Indian population 8216;The future in a plate of rice8217;, IE, June 21. And in a situation where the poor have no interest in educating their children, a good nourishing midday meal 8212; properly supervised by teachers 8212; is a great facilitator in improving the lot of India8217;s young.

Express concern
8226; I Hope the Express will do the necessary to give coverage to the Union Carbide factory issue 8216;US court waits for NOC8230;8217;, IE, June 22. For this to happen, the Indian government needs to submit a letter to the New York court expressing its interest in having Union Carbide clean up the contaminated site.
