Marxists are going the Capitalist way, raising funds for a multi-crore pilgrimage-cum-tourism centre in the party heartland of Kannur. The proposed Rs-25-crore tourism venture, Malabar Pleasures Pvt Ltd., promoted by a group of CPI(M) leaders — including party’s Kannur district secretary M.V. Govindan and former KSTA state secretary K. Balakrishnan Nambiar — is expected to start operations by August, 2005.

Among others on its 13-member board of directors are A.K. Ravindran, nephew of Communist A.K. Gopalan and Kannur district panchayat vice-president P. Jayalakshmi.

The society has already bought 23 acres at Kolmotta, near the famous Muthappan Madappura at Parassinikadavuin Kannur. The comrades are busy raising funds to buy an additional 17 acres for the mega tourism project.

The Malabar Pleasures Pvt Ltd. is a continuation of the Malabar Tourism and Cooperative Ltd. floated by E.P. Jayarajan, former Kannur district secretary of the party and his sister-in-law and CPI(M) Central committee member P.K. Sreemathy.

Jayarajan is currently the secretary-in-charge of CPI(M) Thrissur district committee. During the previous LDF rule, the KINFRA was assigned the job of acquiring 40 acres of land for the CPI(M) tourism project. However, the process came to a halt following the High Court intervention.

There was also stiff resistance from within the party against Jayarajan’s move to float a tourism project. The party later decided to convert the cooperative society into a private Ltd. company in a bid accommodate non-party members to raise funds from NRIs as it had done in the case of Kairali TV channel a few years ago.

The proposed park would be on the lines of a water theme park, comprising an amphitheatre, a dragoncoaster et al. The park will be designed by the Chennai-based Real Fun Consultants and architect Joseph John and his team, that had designed the Veega land and Millennium park, Colombo.

Talking to The Indian Express, M.V. Govindan, MLA, said the project would be completed by August, 2005. ‘‘There was stiff opposition to the project since the time the very idea was mooted. But there is nothing wrong with the party setting up an amusement park,’’ he said.

The revised project said the party intends to recruit 49 directors from outside the party, who are ready to make rich contributions for the project. Apart from raising funds from cooperative banks and societies, the directors have also approached various banks, including the State Bank of Travancore for loans.
