8226; I am shocked but not surprised to hear about the tiger crisis in Sariska and Ranthambhore, recently highlighted in your newspaper. This problem may not be confined to Rajasthan alone. Unfortunately, the administration of national parks is vested in the state governments and is usually left in the hands of semi-educated bureaucrats who know nothing about the value of their charge and care even less. Animal censuses, for instance, are done unscientifically and are reduced to a numbers game. Thus a sudden steep fall in numbers is usually concealed until an investigation reveals the unpalatable truth.

UGC must move

8226; Private Universities still continue cheating students 8216;Lower learning8217;, IE, Feb 14. Most of the parents are not aware of the university structure in India. Chhattisgarh8217;s ICFAI University has been functioning without any proper infrastructure in the respective states where it has a presence. As per UGC norms, a private university can start a campus centre only after five years outside the state. It is also known that the courses its offers are of a different duration to those prescribed by the UGC. Given all this, why can8217;t the UGC not take any action against the ICFAI University?

Secular? Ha!

8226; In India, 8220;secularism8221; of the kind practised by criminals like Laloo Prasad Yadav has become the last refuge for the corrupt and criminal politician. Laloo has kept Bihar mired in divisive politics for his personal gain. He fabricated a Godhra report to gather the windfall of votes that he believes will come his way. And we are all supposed to believe that this cynical politician and criminal is the vanguard of Indian secularism 8216;Laloo8217;s defeat will be a defeat for peace8217;, IE, February 17. Attitudes like these make a common
Indian like me cynical.

Indo-Pak road

8226; Apropos of your editorial,8216;New border lines8217; IE, Feb 18, according to you the ambit of the composite dialogue between two neigbours is so vast that affixing milestones can appear complicated. But we have seen India and Pakistan take many historic steps to reduce regional bitterness. After wars and even the militant attack on Parliament, the Indian government moved to normalise the situation in both the countries and Pakistan responded. The recent visit of Natwar Singh to Pakistan has brought a gift of a bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad for the people of both countries. These steps may not be a permanent solution but spell the beginning of hope.

8226; This road link should have been opened a long time before. The step should be welcomed but it may entail great trouble for India if it facilitates the entry of terrorists into the country.

NCW chief

8226; Now that Girija Vyas of the Congress has become the chief of the NCW, there are a few questions. Is she competent to speak for India8217;s women? Wasn8217;t a women activist a better choice? Will she be able to criticise the government if it takes anti-women positions? Would she have beem appointed her if she was from the BJP? Do such political appointments send out the right signals?
