APRIL 4: Sachin Tendulkar appears intent on shedding the image of a captain in totality. In a surprise move this evening, he relinquished the post of Mumbai captain too.

The batting maestro, who had stepped down as skipper of the Indian cricket team last month, communicated his decision to the Mumbai Ranji Trophy selection committee which met on Tuesday to select the team for the semi-final against Tamil Nadu.

“He (Tendulkar) felt that since Sameer Dighe has led the entire season, it would be better if he continues to do so. Besides, he reasoned that the new boys in the side would be more comfortable under Dighe,” explained Professor Ratnakar Shetty, joint secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Associaton. Thus, Dighe would lead the 33-time national champions for the April 11-15 encounter to be staged at Wankhede Stadium.
