AMBALA, July 23: There was a break down of telephone system in Rani Bagh Area of Ambala cantonment following removal of underground cable last night. Over 400 telephone connections were completely disrupted. It was for the first time that such a breakdown was witnessed in the Ambala cantonment Telecom Department.

According to the sources, the cable was stolen between pillar number 78 and 79 by opening the cable manholes laid by the department. The incident led to total disruption of the communication system. According to a complaint lodged with the police, the department had suffered a loss of over Rs 2 lakh as the stolen cable was worth over Rs. 12,00 per metre.

The investigating officers, from the department and the police, are surprised over the technique employed by the thieves to carry away the cable from the site of a narrow lane. It was impossible to carry the heavy cable without pressing into service a 4-wheeler. However, it is suspected that some disgruntled elements from the department might have joined the miscreants in stealing the cable.
