Telecom industry topped the list in terms of revenue mop up from service tax, paying Rs 1,508.68 crore, which amounted to over 36 per cent of the total collection of Rs 4,123 crore in 2002-03.

Telecom was followed by insurance which contributed Rs 658.46 crore while port services were taxed Rs 204.57 crore last fiscal, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) member Mahendra Prasad said at Phdcci.

Apart from telecom and insurance, banking and other finance companies contributed Rs 162.20 crore by way of service tax while consulting engineers paid Rs 141.74 crore, couriers (Rs 127.87 crore), advertising agencies (125.83 crore), broadcasters (Rs 106.14 crore), stock brokers (80.28 crore) and management consultants (Rs 59.20 crore) last fiscal.
