A general advisory on security alert, normally issued during festivals like Vinayaka Chathurthi, has triggered a spate of rumours about terror groups infiltrating Chennai. This has prompted Tamil Nadu DGP P Rajendran to issue a stern warning against “rumour mongering”.

Earlier, panic spread across Chennai as a spate of messages about a bomb threat circulated through mobile phones. Rajendran said the state was “calm and peaceful” and that there was “no special information of any extremist alert from the Intelligence Bureau to the state”.

“We received a warning two days ago as part of an all-India alert. This was issued immediately after the Hyderabad blasts only to strengthen security as a precautionary measure,” he said on Tuesday.

The state intelligence had been monitoring the security situation closely after the Union Home Ministry alerted all the states to step up surveillance and keep extra vigil at religious especially during festive occasions, he said, warning stern action against those spreading rumours about terrorist attacks in the state.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi accused AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa of making statements “to terrify people.” Her statements would attract punishment under criminal laws, he warned.
