SEPT 6: A day after some Vidharbha leaders raised the banner of revolt demanding statehood for the region, Congress today said talks were on between them and the AICC Committee on smaller states headed by Pranab Mukherjee on various issues including formation of a separate PCC.

"Talks were on between Congress leaders of the region and the AICC Committee on smaller states headed by Pranab Mukherjee," party spokesman Anand Sharma said when asked to comment on the developments in the Vidharbha unit of the party.

Asked if the party was in favour of a separate Vidarbha state and a separate Pradesh Congress Committee for the region, Sharma said the committee was considering these issues.

Meanwhile, Vidarbha Congress leaders who had threatened to boycott the party’s organisational polls in Maharashtra and demanded a separate Pradesh Congress committee, met AICC general secretary Moti Lal Vora and apprised him of prevailing sentiments on the issue.

In a fax message to Vora, AICC general secretary inchargeof Maharashtra affairs, textile Minister Ranjit Deshmukh and local MP Vilas Muttemwar had sought postponement of party polls to the state PCC and creation of a Vidarbha PCC.

The demands put forward by Deshmukh and Muttemwar werealso endorsed by former deputy Chief Minister Nashikrao Tirpude and former local MP Banwarilal Purohit.

The two leaders, Deshmukh and Muttemwar, have also soughtan appointment with party President Sonia Gandhi to apprise her about the sentiments of the people and seek her intervention on the issue.
