BIJAPUR, MARCH 24: Karnataka major irrigation Minister H K Patil on Friday failed to persuade the Almatti Horata Committee,’ which is spearheading a campaign for raising the height of the Almatti dam, to give up their "kar seva" on March 26 in support of their demand.

Patil held negotiations with committee president Sri Sangannabasava Swamiji of Yarnal, who told him that they were firm on holding their programme, officials said.

Opposition leader in the Legislative Coucil K H Srinivas also took part in the discussions.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister S M Krishna had in the Legislative Assembly, appealed to the agitators to call off their stir, noting that the issue was before the Supreme Court and urged for restraint.

The committee comprising farmers, political parties and religious heads, has given a call for kar seva to install crest gates at the Almatti dam in Bijapur district.
