Such has been the anxiety level among the Chinese on the security of the Olympic torch in New Delhi that its Ambassador to India Zhang Yan made an unusual request for a meeting with the DCP, New Delhi, who is the local police officer in charge of the arrangements. It was politely conveyed to the Chinese envoy that such a step broke all protocol. But the Chinese Embassy was adamant about a local meeting to discuss the measures that would be taken to keep Tibetan protesters away from the torch. However, matters calmed down after India agreed to allow the Chinese security team to liaise with Delhi Police. Zhang was also told that it would be embarrassing for both countries if the Ambassador were to land up at the DCP’s office.
