CBI plans to dump the Rs 175-crore Taj Heritage case against former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has run into rough weather with the Supreme Court asking the agency to produce the evidence collected by it before it.

A three-member bench comprising of Justice Rumapal, Justice S B Singh and Justice S H Kapadia on Monday gave CBI two weeks time to produce the entire case file and evidence collected against the BSP supremo before it.

The agency’s submission that the evidence had been given to Attorney General Milon Bannerjee did not go down well with the court.

More damning, the court said ‘‘It appears from the status report submitted by CBI Director U S Mishra that having regard to evidence gathered as well as the opinion of the Attorney General, that prosecution was not to be launched’’.

The court made its mind clear that it would thoroughly scrutinise the evidence and the proposed closure opinion and said the CBI would not attempt anything as closure of the case. It also recorded the statement of Solicitor General G E Vahanvati that no closure report would be filed by the probe agency till further orders.

Others who figured in the list of accused with Mayawati were former Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary D S Bagga, her Personal Secretary P L Punia and the then State Environment Secretary R K Sharma.
