PLEASE don8217;t write this,8217;8217; pleads Tabu. She covers her face with her hands and shakes with muted laughter. 8216;8216;You will not write this,8217;8217; she insists, before revealing the last movie she8217;s seen. 8216;8216;Parasmani.8217;8217;

That8217;s Tabu, at home watching a VCD of the 1963 classic about a lover8217;s quest to find a pearl that will help him win his lady love.

After her gutsy performance as the mercurial Nimmi in Vishal Bharadwaj8217;s Maqbool and her three-in-one act in MF Husain8217;s Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities, Tabu decided she needed a sabbatical. 8216;8216;It was a conscious decision to be outside of everything,8217;8217; says the actor, who8217;s spent the last year doing precisely what she wants.

For one, she travelled extensively and rented an apartment in London for two months. 8216;8216;I would catch at least one movie or play every day. And I didn8217;t have to bother with the jhanjhat of cooking. I would just step out of my home and head for the Spanish restaurant that served amazing paella,8217;8217; she says.

She also hooked up with two girlfriends and zipped off to Rome. 8216;8216;One of them was three months pregnant so the trip became quite educational,8217;8217; she laughs. Like Tabu now knows that shopping every half an hour for this particular mother-to-be was crucial. The highlight of that journey was a trip to Vatican City. 8216;8216;The feel of that place is immense and uplifting. It8217;s as if you are in a new world.8217;8217;

Clooney chatters endlessly. He wanted to know how Indian actresses can sing and dance in a sari

In San Francisco, she attended a book reading of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni8217;s Queen of Dreams, and caught up with her favourite author over dinner. She also read Paulo Coelho8217;s The Alchemist for the fourth time and Jhumpa Lahiri8217;s Interpreter of Maladies for the third time.

The vacation meant that she could finally do all the things she had always wanted to. Like learn a foreign language. 8216;8216;My friends said that Spanish was easier than French.8217;8217; She also trained in yoga. 8216;8216;I can really feel the difference in my body after learning yoga,8217;8217; she adds, and does a stretch to demonstrate her new agility.

SCREEN PRESENCE

Hu Tu Tu The character was much ahead of its time. I was quite young and it took me a while to understand all the layers of the character. It8217;s one of my finest roles. Gulzarsaab also let me cut my hair for it.
Astitva For the simple reason that wherever I go in the world, women come up to me and tell me that I8217;ve been their voice. I am so glad that Mahesh Manjrekar let me play Aditi, the way I wanted to.
Chandni Bar Everyone thinks I gave a very nuanced performance in this film. I don8217;t disagree, but I feel that Mumtaz is the same throughout the film. The situations around her are volatile but she8217;s just being herself.
Maqbool Nimmi is very
close to my heart. She8217;s so completely unexplained to me till now. She8217;s almost surreal. The film is also so special, because I got to work with the best palette of talent. I feel blessed to be around such greatness.
Abar Aranye One of the high points of my career because I dubbed for myself in Bengali. I feel proud of it.
Maachis What strength, and my first national award.

Ask her if she met any interesting men during her travels and she chuckles. 8216;8216;Yeah, Ralph Fiennes.8217;8217; She spotted The English Patient star hailing a cab in London, so went up to him, introduced herself as an actor from Mumbai and got his autograph. 8216;8216;He had no qualms travelling in a cab. Look at us, we can8217;t move without our Mercs and sunglasses,8217;8217; says Tabu.

She also met up with other Hollywood hotties George Clooney and Nicholas Cage at the Venice Film Festival where she had gone for the screening of her Bengali film Abar Aranye.

At the party for Cage8217;s film Matchstick Men, she ensured she got their autographs, too. 8216;8216;Clooney chatters endlessly. He wanted to know how Indian actresses can sing and dance in a sari. Cage was quite polite. He had seen

Maqbool and appreciated my performance,8217;8217; she says.

The 31-year-old actor next met up with Phone Booth star Colin Farrell at the Marrakech Festival where Maqbool was screened. 8216;8216;Farrell is really hot. I met him at a party in Morocco and he was dressed in those exotic robes with earrings and all. He had a ponytail and looked dashing,8217;8217; she says.

Now back home, Tabu is getting ready to face the cameras once again. She8217;s signed Zoya Akhtar8217;s debut Luck: By Chance and Khaled Mohammed8217;s Silsiley. She8217;s also doing a Telugu film with Chiranjeevi. 8216;8216;I8217;ve come back with joy and want to be a part of only those films that really excite me,8217;8217; she says. 8216;8216;There hasn8217;t been a day in my acting career that I haven8217;t enjoyed and I want to keep it like that.8217;8217;
