
MUMBAI, January 25: Last year’s finalists Sydenham College extracted a sweet revenge shocking defending champions HR College of Commerce with an emphatic 3-1 victory in the semi-finals of the Bombay University Inter-Collegiate Badminton Championships at the University Pavilion here this afternoon.
The winners now take on the might of Joshi Bedekar, who slugged it out before emerging 3-2 victors over Mithibai.
HR, whoever, can gain solace in Sanket Shetty’s entry into the men’s singles final. Shetty, who had registered the only victory for HR in the team event in the semis, downed Sydenham’s Kunal Vaswani 15-9 15-6 top enter the final. Shetty’s opponent in the summit clash will be Mithibai’s Sushant Niddedi, who upstaged Harshad Tawde of Sydenham 15-6 15-3.
Defending champions in the women’s team event, Ruia did not damage to their reputation recording a convincing 2-0 victory over RA Podar to enter the final. They lock horns with Joshi Bedekar, made the grade without playing as their semi-final opponents Mithibai failed to turn up.

Goregaon XI beat BEST
Goregaon XI defeated BEST 2-1 in the Hockey Association of Mumbai Rizvi Third Division League at the St Andrew’s ground, Bandra, today.
Mohan Menon and Rajesh Pote scored for the winners and V Furtado did likewise for the losers.
Republicans C win
Bombay Republicans C’ routed Brother’s Sports Club 3-1 in a crucial qualifying Pool B Division IV encounter of the Bombay Hockey Association League at BHA Stadium here this evening.
Both sides were locked 1-1 at half-time.
In a Divison III pool C tie Rebel SC trounced Eskimos B 3-1.
Young Challengers held Marinagar to a 1-1 draw in a Division I match. Darshan Pardeshi equalised for Challengers after L Rodrigues had given Marinagar the lead.
Kang victorious
Lt Col KJS Kang won the 36-hole stroke play Republic Day Trophy at the BPGC course today. He improved on his first day 82 with a round of 75, shooting three birdies for an aggregate of 157. Ratan Bali with a total of 160 finished second. Capt Kailash Harsh won the prize for the best net (144).
