GOTHENBURG, November 30: The United States suffered their heaviest Davis Cup defeat for 24 years today when Sweden completed a 5-0 whitewash in the final.Jonas Bjorkman, the driving force of the home team beat Jonathan Stark 6-1, 6-1 in a semi-serious singles before Magnus Larsson overcame Michael Chang 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in the final rubber to complete an American humiliation.

The last time the US were beaten 5-0 was in the 1973 final in Cleveland, Ohio, against an Australian team built on the skills of Rod Laver and John Newcombe. The last 5-0 scoreline in a final was in 1987 when Sweden beat India.
