Special ward for leptospirosis patients
The New Civil Hospital authorities set up a special ward for leptospirosis patients here on Wednesday. Three patients are undergoing treatment at the Surat New Civil Hospital, while one was moved to the Mahavir Hospital.
According to in-charge superintendent Dr K Saifee, seven cases of suspected leptospirosis were reported from the district so far. Two patients were being treated at a Vyara Hospital. The state government has set up a control room at the office of the district health officer to monitor the disease.
Remanded
Five gangsters of the Bhura Munja gang of Porbandar namely Raju Goswami, Bhimsingh Ahir, Prakash Desai, Laxman Goswami, Suresh Patel and Shivnath Amarnath, were produced before a magistrate late on Wednesday evening and remanded in police custody until August 1. Another criminal, Dharmendra Punjabi, arrested by the Umra police in the case where Rs 10.50 laks were recovered from an abandoned car, was also produced before a magistrate and granted remand until August 1.

Heavy rains, accompanied by winds are likely to lash parts of the region including Surat, Valsad, Dangs and the union territories of Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, according to the met office here. Many parts of the district, including Surat received mild rainfall on Wednesday. The flood control room, in a statement, has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea in the next 48 hours.
