Civil Hospital superintendent transferred
Superintendent of Surat’s New Civil Hospital Dr B V Subrahmanyam was on Tuesday transferred as Dean of Bhavnagar Medical College, in view of the impending inspection by the Medical Council of India. The dean’s post in the Bhavnagar college was lying vacant. Professor Khadija Saifee of the Pathology Department has been given the charge of superintendent of the Surat hospital. Last week as many as 11 teachers, including seven professors, were transferred to Rajkot ahead of inspection by an MCI team.

New Excise head
Surat Central Excise (Range I) Commissioner Anant Ram was on Tuesday transferred in the same capacity to Range II, whose jurisdiction extends from Navsari to Umargam. Range II Commissioner Gurubaksh Singh was appointed in his place. Only on Monday, additional commissioner S K Chaudhary was transferred to Ahmedabad. The twin transfers assume importance in the wake of ongoing tussle between the Excise department and textile industry.

Following a series of complaints by local industrialists senior Excise officials were forced to come to Surat to inquire into allegations of harassment and torture during searches and raids on mills. A five-member committee with Anant Ram and four representatives from textile industry was set up to go into past complaints early this month. Textile industrialists draw their strength from the fact the local member of Parliament Kashiram Rana has become Union Textile Minister. Rana had taken up the complaints against local officials with top officials of the department, which is believed to have contributed to the recent transfers.
