
Leprosy camp inaugurated
A five-day Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery Mega Camp was inaugurated by District Collector Sangeeta Singh on Wednesday Eleven plastic surgeons from Gujarat and Mumbai are rendering their services for 12 hours daily and operating upon 300 patients. The New Civil Hospital has arranged four special wards for leprosy patients. The camp is co-ordinated by medical Superintendent Dr K A Saifee.
Awarded Ph.D
Falguni K Patel has been awarded a Ph.D. degree in chemistry by the South Gujarat University on A CMC Determination of Surfactants by Using Dye-Indicator Spectral Method8217; under the guidance of Dr C M Desai.
NIFT sub-centre
The National Institute of Fashion Technology NIFT plans to set up its sub-centre in Surat. The office will be located at the Sarvjanik Society complex. The Sarvajnik Society has agreed in-principle to allow the Institute to run their evening courses in its building. Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana had announced in 1998 that a sub-centre would be set up in the city, but the centre was delayed due to non-availability of space.
Action plan
An action plan to launch a cleanliness drive in rural areas has been prepared by the district authorities. The plan, chalked out to prevent water-borne diseases in villages, will be implemented in co-ordination with the health department, the taluka mamlatdar and the taluka development officer.
Traders fined
Surat district weight and measurement officer N M Rathore penalised 85 traders in the city and the district for irregularities in weighing commodities and collected fine to the tune of Rs 16600.
