NEW DELHI, MARCH 9: The Supreme Court today reserved judgment on the suits filed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the dispute over sharing of Krishna river water and the height of Almatti Dam over the river.

A constitution bench comprising Justice S B Majmudar, Justice G B Pattanaik, Justice V N Khare, Justice U C Banerjee and Justice R P Sethi, reserved the judgment after hearing the arguments on behalf of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra (where the river originates), and the Union Government. The hearing had started on January 19.

Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had filed the suits airing their grievances over the manner of implementation of sharing of the river water allotted by Bachawat Tribunal nearly 25 years ago. The Tribunal had taken into account a minimum flow of 2060 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water in Krishna river and allotted 560 TMC to Maharashtra, 700 to Karnataka and 800 to Andhra Pradesh.

However, there was dispute over the sharing of excess water and also the Almatti dam, height of which Karnataka wanted to raise from the present 509 metres to 524 metres.
