On Sunday, April 11, a unique event took place at Crossword Bookshop. At 11.30 a.m the area was swarming with children accompanied by an adult to meet Tarla Dalal, the famous author of many cook-books.
Yes, it does seem strange that the youngsters should take time out to listen to the intricacies of cooking. But this was the occasion of the release of a book titled Cooking with Kids8217;. Though the book is written by Tarla Dalal, the recipes have been tried and tested by kids of the age group eight-12 years.
Two youngsters demonstrated two recipes to the huge audience. Very sure of themselves, they spoke confidently of what they were doing and why the end products were delicious. This concept of a cookery book of the children, for the children and by them too is the first of its kind. Though the basic recipe was thought out by Tarla and her assistants, they left the final blueprint in the hands of 16 young children from the neighbourhood.
The book is indeed a good idea not only for the ones intended, but also for the mothers who are at a loss during the long summer holidays as to what new dish to cook up for the child. Now the mother can safely leave the cooking to the child. Most of the recipes do not require an adult to be present in the kitchen while the cooking goes on. Wherever a blender or an oven has to be used and an adult is required, the particular recipe in the book is marked with an A8217;.
There are recipes on soups, salads, snacks, sandwiches, cakes and dessert, which can help parents relax while the juniors make the breakfast or a heavy snack or organise a tea party. The book has a list of basic equipments to be around before the activity begins, such as the measuring cups, bowls and spoons. This does away with complicated measurements. A page is devoted to first aid, one to cooking tips and another to cookery jargon.
