Sudha Singh, representing Jharkhand, did erase the meet record in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, but her performance was only of an academic interest on the penultimate day of the 14th Federation Cup in Bhopal today.

Sudha apart, other top athletes on view on Thursday did well but none was able to achieve the goal: Beijing qualification mark.

The Jharkhand runner, who had been dominating the event since its inception two years ago, ran the race in 10:29.92 seconds, bettering the previous best of 10:44.76 in the name of Santhi Soundarajan in 2006. However, the eventual winner could not better her personal best and the existing national record time of 10:18.76.

Maha Singh, who returned to the national scene after a brief hiatus, claimed the long jump gold with a distance of 7.57m in the men’s event.

Even national record holder in men’s high jump, Hari Shankar Roy—he represented Jharkhand in the meet—wasn’t impressive. He managed to scale 2.15m, which fetched him the gold. Roy’s main rival, Bendict Starley from Tamil Nadu, got the silver at 2.11m. The women’s shot put title went to Seema Antil from the CRPF. Her winning distance was 14.17m. Meanwhile, the participation of long jumper Anju Bobby George tomorrow is in doubt as her entry hasn’t been confirmed yet.
