ROOPNAGAR, JUNE 22: The Vigilance Bureau here has booked three Punjab Police cops, including an Sub-Inspector for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a druggist in Kurali. Sources in the Vigilance department today revealed that Sub-Inspector Gurmeet Singh, who is also in charge of Kurali police post is absconding, while head constable Bhupinder Singh and home guard, Gurmeet Singh were caught red-handed. The two were arrested on the complaint of Jagmohan Lal, a wholesale distributor of medicines in the town.
The complainant had charged the SI of demanding Rs 5,000 as monthly protection money from him.
He, however, refused to appease Gurmeet, following which the cops seized several medicines and injections from his shop and warned to implicate him in a false case of drug trafficking. The seized medicines were taken to the Kurali police post and Jagmohan was asked to cough up Rs 5,000 to settle the matter.
Subsequently, the complainant approached the Vigilance department and had a trap laid at the Kurali police post on Monday evening. As part of the strategy, Jagmohan persuaded Gurmeet to finalise a deal at Rs 3,000. Agreeing to Jagmohan8217;s request, Gurmeet asked him to hand over the money to head constable Bhupinder Singh.
According to DSP Vigilance Malvinder Singh Sidhu, the head constable further asked the home guard to pocket the graft money. When a team of Vigilance Bureau raided the police post, SI Gurmeet Singh was not present at the scene. However, Bhupinder and the home guard were arrested with the graft money.
The Vigilance department officials clarified that Jagmohan was being harassed unnecessarily as he had licenses to sell the seized medicines and injections.
