Four men shot dead a student leader in Teliarganj area under Shivkuti police station on Tuesday evening.

The assailants called Rajesh Dwivedi, a first year LLB student of Allahabad University, to come out of his room in a lodge, where he had been staying, and pumped bullets into him. Before the other inmates of the lodge could understand what had happened, the assailants fled. Rajesh died on the spot.

Angry students gathered at the spot. They alleged that the local police was hand in glove with the killers, who have been identified as Krishna Deo Mishra, a suspended policeman, Vijay Tiwari, Rajeev Tiwari and Sant Prashad Tiwari. The students cordoned off the area and did not allow the policemen to take the away body for at least four hours. They demanded that the station officer of Shivkuti be immediately suspended.

SSP Lalji Shukla said he would take action against the station officer if he was found not performing his duty.

Personal rivalry has been stated to be the reason behind the murder. A few months ago, Rajesh and another student leader Vijay Dwivedi had allegedly opened fire on Vijay Tiwari and his men at Katra. Vijay and Rajesh were reportedly closely associated with some leaders of the ruling BSP. Since then, Tiwari and his men were on the lookout for Rajesh.
