With the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) threatening to call off the proposed peace talks unless Army operations against its cadre are stopped, a message is likely to be despatched to the Centre in this regard soon.

It is understood that the ULFA message is being sent to National Security Advisor (NSA) M K Narayanan through Indira Goswami, the noted Assamese writer and a member of the panel set up by the outfit for the proposed talks with the government.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Goswami today said, ‘‘The proposed talks between the People’s Consultative Group (PCG) and the Centre are uncertain now. The peace process has suffered a setback.’’

The talks between the 11-member PCG delegation and the NSA was scheduled to take place in the first fortnight of October.

Goswami said the ULFA wanted the government to ‘‘mellow’’ down its military operations and stop the encounters with its cadre.

The move came even as the Army’s Tezpur III Corps and the Assam Police have surrounded an ULFA camp in Tinsukia forests.

All supplies to at least 40-60 militants believed to be in the area have been cut-off and they have been going without food or medicine. Fourteen militants in the camp were reported to have been killed.

Government sources said a divisional-level offensive was currently on against the ULFA in the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, north-east of Guhawati.
