Panel set up for safe return of Kashmiri migrants

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has constituted a sub-commitee to propose an action plan for the safe and honourable return of Kashmiri migrants to the Valley. The sub-committee, headed by financial commissioner, planning and development M L Koul, will also ascertain difficulties faced by the migrants in the camps and suggest measures to rectify them, an official spokesman said today. The five-member sub-committee, which was constituted at a meeting of the apex committee for Kashmiri migrants, will interact with migrants including traders, unit holders, non-camp migrants, orchardists, pensioners and government employees, the spokesman said.

Steep hike in coffee prices likely

NEW DELHI: An 8220;abnromal8217; increase in coffee prices in India is likely after global coffee prices hit a new high on Thursday as the producing countries gave indications of tight supply, according to industry sources. Rising international prices and lower domestic crop production estimates have already pushed up the prices by 20 per cent since February 24. The steep hike was due to producing nations, like Brazil, Colombia and Ivory Coast, find problems and stocks being low with traders. India, too, has been hit with the same problem as production this crop year july 1996-june 1997 has been estimated to be a low 2.05 lakh tonnes by the coffee board.

Lohia award for TV journalist

Neelam Mahajan Singh, a TV journalist, has been selected for the Ram Manohar Lohia award8217; for excellence in Hindi journalism for 1996. This was announced by Reva Shankar Trivedi, chairman of the Ram Manohar Lohia Smarak society, which has decided to give the award to coincide with the 88th birth anniversary of the socialist leader and philosopher. Singh is the first woman to receive the Lohia award.

Three perish in Imphal ambush

IMPHAL: At least three persons 8212; two army personnel and a civilian were killed and two others injured following an ambush by armed activists at Phubala village in Manipur8217;s Bishenpur district early this morning. Official sources here said about 20 to 30 armed activists ambushed the 8th Bihar regiment vehicle while it was proceeding to Moirang from Imphal.

17 dead in two Karnataka mishaps

BANGALORE: Seventeen persons, including seven pilgrims, were killed and 33 injured in two road accidents in Karnataka8217;s Mysore and Kolar districts since last night. Ten persons, including four women and a child, died and 24 suffered injuries when a Karnataka state road transport corporation KSRTC bus in which they were travelling and a loaded tipper collided at Murugal village near Bangarpet in Kolar district last night, a report from Kolar said. Four persons were killed on the spot, while six succumbed to injuries in hospital. The bus was on its way to Bangalore.
