MUMBAI, June 20: The state government will disburse grants to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to open additional classes of standard VIII in its schools in the city.

Education minister Sudhir Joshi gave this assurance to Mayor Vishakha Raut today. Raut said that owing to acute shortage of Std VIII classes in municipal schools, the BMC was forced to reject admissions to many students.

“We had received many complaints in this regard from parents, especially from areas like Karur village and Goregaon where over 150 students who had passed out from standard VII could not get admission to the next class,” Raut said. “Joshi has assured that the government would render the necessary financial assistance to the BMC,” she added.

The meeting was attended by the education committee chairperson Neeta Naik and leader of the House in the BMC, Nandu Satam. In fact, during the meeting of the BMC co-ordination committee and the state government held last year, the former had demanded state assistance to open additional high school classes in 40 municipal schools. However, Chief Minister had turned down the proposal stating that high school education was an obligatory duty of the BMC, and it should first improve the primary education imparted in its schools.
