Professional golf is definitely the epitome of excellence. However, a winner in any form of golf takes pride in being a champion. Any golfer takes his golf as seriously as amply displayed by the top professionals in the sport. The passion for the sport is the same, the feeling of making a birdie and the urge to score an eagle is the same.
Hence, it was nothing different at the Vipul Corporate Invitational Golf Tournament. To give the silver lining for the two-day event, was a plethora of cricket stars – some past and some present led by the dashing opening Virendra Sehwag and Indian cricketer of the Century Kapil Dev. Of course, the participation of Olympic silver medallist Major RS Rathore and Olympian Pargat Singh added to the variety of sportspersons.
More and more cricketers are taking to this game, with Sehwag being the latest victim of the golf bug. Golf has surely come a long way with the sport being played by the Presidents — John F Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, George Bush including India’s own Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (President 1974-77) and politicians like Sharad Pawar, late Ramakrishna Hegde, Farooq Abdullah and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed to name a few.
Film stars, musicians and models — Sylvester Stallone, Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Arnold Schwarzenneger, Michael Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Cindy Crawford, Celine Dion, worldwide play this game. However, I fail to understand as to why our film stars and models have not taken to the game, as they can be the biggest ambassadors of the sport.
Ever wondered as to why more and more people, especially the celebrities have begun playing golf? Apart from being an elite game, golf is now being used as a wonder drug in terms of relaxant, a stress buster and a way to keep fit.
