Sri Lanka8217;s Tamil Tiger rebels destroyed an army boat and government troops sank a Tiger vessel in a battle Saturday, an official said, adding that three rebels died and three soldiers were missing.

The morning battle occurred off the northern Jaffna peninsula when about five rebel boats attacked two army patrol craft, said an officer at the Defence Ministry8217;s media centre.

Soldiers on shore sank one rebel boat with an artillery barrage, killing three rebels, while one army boat was also destroyed in the attack, the officer said on condition of anonymity.

Three soldiers have gone missing, said the officer. He said the army8217;s retaliatory fire had forced the other rebel boats to retreat.

The Tigers confirmed the sea clash, but denied they suffered any casualties.
