OUAGADOUGOU, JANUARY 11: France’s jean-louis schlesser won the fifth stage of the 2000 dakar rally here by just eight seconds from compatriot stephane peterhansel to move up a place to second overall in the auto section.

The driver-constructor won the 762-km stretch yesterday with 485 km of specials between bobo dioulasso and ouagadougou in burkina faso in three hours 55 minutes and four seconds. Then came peterhansel’s mega with Japan’s kenjiro shinozuka third in his mitsubishi 52 seconds behind.

Shinozuka leads overall by six minutes from schlesser with peterhansel moving up to third spot 10:10 behind. The main loser on the day was the mitsubishi of frenchman jean-pierre fontenay, falling from second to fourth spot 14:53 adrift.

Heinz kinigadner won the moto section from ktm teammate joan roma of spain, who leads overall. France’s richard sainct was the first bmw, finishing third 44 seconds behind Austrian kinigadner.

Such small time differences made no impact on the overall results, with roma increasing his lead very slightly over sainct to 23:22 and third-placed kinigadner creeping closer to sainct at 28:55.

Ktm’s giovanni sala of italy did not start due to injuries from a crash on Saturday and bmw lost their first rider when britain’s john deacon crashed heavily, hurting his shoulder and leg and breaking a bone in his hand.
