In the wake of the Supreme Court ordering UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to furnish details of his income and that of his family, the Samajwadi Party has risen to its chief’s defence and threatened to move court to demand income details of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her family.

Speaking to the media, party general-secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh said, ‘‘We would like to know how Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and other members of her family live lavishly while she has officially declared she has only Rs 20,000 in the bank. We will ask the court to ascertain this.’’

Singh accused Gandhi of indulging in ‘‘vendetta politics’’ against the SP and its supporters, and said even party sympathisers like Amitabh Bachchan have not been spared. He, however, clarified that the UP CM regularly filed his Income Tax returns and updated copies were with the department and the Election Commission.
