Samajwadi Party on Wednesday expressed hope that Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee would continue in his post even after his expulsion from CPM.

SP general secretary Amar Singh said in New Delhi that he, along with SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, had met Chatterjee at the latter’s residence and told the Speaker that Samajwadi Party along with other parties would give their support to him.

“He has not done anything wrong to be expelled from CPM. As a Speaker, he is a constitutional authority and is above party lines. In fact, his personality is such that he is above politics. Mulayam Singh Yadav and myself met him and expressed hope that he would remain as Speaker”, he said.

“We hope that he will not break hearts of so many of his well wishers,” Singh said.
